Barbour County woman among five new COVID-19 deaths reported in West Virginia on Tuesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 19,277cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 2,140 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (172), Barbour (99), Lewis (104), Randolph (320) and Webster (69) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of 37 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Five additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 53-year old male from Nicholas County, a 54-year old male from Preston County, an 80-year old female from Jefferson County, a 63-year old female from Barbour County, and an 86-year old female from Preston County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of January 25, 2022, there are currently 19,277 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been five deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,650 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 976 residents are hospitalized with the virus (66% unvaccinated, 34% vaccinated), with 223 currently in intensive care (80% unvaccinated, 20% vaccinated) and 104 on a ventilator (92% unvaccinated, 8% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 24.27%.

A total of 947,701 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 53% of the state. Of those, 375,042 have received their booster dose.
