B-U swim teams compete in Big 10 Championships

BRIDGEPORT – The Buckhannon-Upshur swim teams competed in the Big 10 Championships Saturday at the Bridge Sports Complex.

The Lady Bucs finished fifth out of 11 teams with 64 points while the Bucs were sixth out of nine teams with 44 points.

On the ladies’ side, Elkins won the team title with 249 points while Bridgeport was second with 175 and Fairmont Senior was third with 108 points.

The top finishes for the Lady Bucs were a pair of fourth places achieved individual by Mallory Hughes and the 200-yard freestyle relay team.

Hughes finished fourth out of 24 swimmers in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.15.

The 200-yard freestyle team consisted of Lillian Fetty, Samantha Shay, Rylee Yardley and Hughes placing fourth out of nine teams with a time of 1:59.26.

Buckhannon-Upshur finished with a trio of seventh places.

Those belonged to Fetty in the 200-yard freestyle (2:25.76), Shay in the 200-yard IM (2:59.16) and the foursome of Fetty, Yardley, Hughes and Shay in the 200-yard medley relay (2:18.78).

On the boys’ side, Bridgeport won the team championship with 288 points while Robert C. Byrd was second with 152 and Elkins was third with 114.

Carter Zuliani had the top two finishes for the Bucs, placing third in both the 50-yard freestyle against 27 other swimmers with a time of 23.00 and in the 100-yard freestyle against 23 other swimmers with a time of 55.78.

The next highest finish was a sixth that came from the foursome of Riley Bender, Johnny Chen, Aidan Squires and Zuliani in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:56.33.

Both teams will be back in action Saturday in the Region III Championships at Bridgeport.
