Active COVID cases fall for second straight day, but positivity remains over 20%

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 15,906 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 1,333 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (144), Barbour (78), Lewis (100), Randolph (260) and Webster (53) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of 13 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Fifteen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – of a 79-year old male from Cabell County, a 66-year old male from Mercer County, a 77-year old female from Mercer County, an 80-year old male from Cabell County, a 75-year old male from Berkeley County, a 67-year old male from Cabell County, a 57-year old female from Raleigh County, an 80-year old male from Harrison County, a 67-year old female from Mercer County, an 85-year old male from Cabell County, a 94-year old female from Cabell County, a 90-year old male from Berkeley County, a 64-year old female from Raleigh County, a 78-year old female from Jefferson County, and an 86-year old female from Berkeley County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of January 19, 2022, there are currently 15,906 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 15 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,576 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 907 residents are hospitalized with the virus (71% unvaccinated, 29% vaccinated), with 207 currently in intensive care (83% unvaccinated, 17% vaccinated) and 124 on a ventilator (88% unvaccinated, 12% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 22.67%.

A total of 944,754 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 53% of the state. Of those, 368,948 have received their booster dose.
