Active COVID-19 cases increase locally, DHHR reports Friday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 11,116 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 59 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (175), Barbour (141), Lewis (93), Randolph (236) and Webster (63) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of 34 active cases in the last 24 hours; all five counties reported a jump in cases Friday.

Seventeen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 76-year old female from Brooke County, an 81-year old female from Mingo County, a 78-year old male from Greenbrier County, a 63-year old female from Kanawha County, an 82-year old male from Marion County, a 55-year old male from Nicholas County, a 76-year old male from Cabell County, a 65-year old female from Kanawha County, a 74-year old female from Jackson County, a 60-year old male from Morgan County, a 69-year old male from Raleigh County, a 73-year old female from Fayette County, a 64-year old male from Wayne County, an 84-year old female from Fayette County, a 58-year old male from Kanawha County, an 80-year old male from Wood County, and an 84-year old female from Logan County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of February 4, 2022, there are currently 11,116 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 17 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,846 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 1,061 residents are hospitalized with the virus (68% unvaccinated, 32% vaccinated), with 233 currently in intensive care (79% unvaccinated, 21% vaccinated) and 126 on a ventilator (86% unvaccinated, 14% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 14.69%.

A total of 952,974 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 53% of the state. Of those, 385,477 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
