Active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia spike to highest level in more than two months

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 9,478 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 874 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (76), Barbour (74), Lewis (72), Randolph (105) and Webster (29) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of eight active cases in the last 24 hours.

Eighteen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 67-year old female from Marshall County, a 66-year old female from Hampshire County, a 76-year old female from Kanawha County, a 77-year old male from Monongalia County, a 64-year old male from Harrison County, an 80-year old male from Greenbrier County, a 75-year old male from Raleigh County, a 93-year old male from Raleigh County, a 46-year old male from Barbour County, a 77-year old female from Hardy County, a 79-year old male from Harrison County, a 61-year old male from Fayette County, a 61-year old female from Kanawha County, a 71-year old female from Cabell County, an 84-year old male from Tucker County, an 83-year old female from Kanawha County, a 72-year old female from Monongalia County, and a 76-year old female from Clay County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of December 29, 2021, there are currently 9,478 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 18 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,305 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 635 residents are hospitalized with the virus (80% unvaccinated, 20% vaccinated), with 194 currently in intensive care (88% unvaccinated, 12% vaccinated) and 101 on a ventilator (88% unvaccinated, 12% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 12.45%.

A total of 918,136 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 51% of the state.
