Active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia hit the lowest level since July 2020

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 872 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 220 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (9), Barbour (6), Lewis (7), Randolph (7) and Webster (1) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of 10 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Twenty-two additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – of a 74-year old female from Fayette County, a 67-year old female from Mercer County, a 74-year old male from Putnam County, an 83-year old female from Wyoming County, a 75-year old male from Fayette County, a 39-year old male from Berkeley County, a 78-year old male from Logan County, a 79-year old male from Raleigh County, a 72-year old male from Fayette County, a 77-year old female from Fayette County, a 73-year old male from McDowell County, a 77-year old male from Logan County, an 87-year old female from Raleigh County, a 63-year old female from Berkeley County, a 76-year old female from Fayette County, a 69-year old female from McDowell County, a 73-year old male from Hampshire County, a 74-year old female from Cabell County, an 89-year old female from Raleigh County, a 91-year old male from Lewis County, an 80-year old male from Mason County, an 82-year old male from Marshall County, a 101-year old female from Raleigh County, and a 78-year old male from Harrison County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of March 16, 2022, there are currently 872 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 24 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,622 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 262 residents are hospitalized with the virus (61% unvaccinated, 39% vaccinated), with 72 currently in intensive care (65% unvaccinated, 35% vaccinated) and 44 on a ventilator (71% unvaccinated, 29% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 2.46%.

A total of 965,861 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said. That’s about 54% of the state. Of those, 417,389 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
