Active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia hit an all-time high as deadly August comes to a close

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Monday that 140 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

The number of active cases in the state also surpassed the 2,000 mark for the first time since the pandemic began. According to the DHHR, there are 2,019 active cases as of Monday.

One additional death has been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 58-year old male from Raleigh County. That brings the total number of deaths in August to 98, by far the state’s deadliest month.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 10 a.m., on August 31, 2020, there have been 435,863 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 10,250 total cases and 214 deaths,” according to a press release.

Upshur County reported just five new COVID-19 cases in August, two of which are currently active, according to the DHHR. Upshur ranks 18th of the state’s 55 counties for lowest total number of cases to date.

New cases were reported Monday in Berkeley, Cabell, Calhoun, Clay, Fayette, Grant, Jackson, Jefferson, Kanawha, Logan, Marion, Mason, Mercer, Mineral, Mingo, Monongalia, Monroe, Morgan, Ohio, Putnam, Randolph, Roane, Wood and Wyoming counties.

About 2,019 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 8,017 people have recovered and 214 have died. The daily percent positive was 2.8%.
