Active COVID-19 cases in West Virginia decline Tuesday, 17 new deaths reported

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 17,435 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 4,055 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (325), Barbour (102), Lewis (192), Randolph (188) and Webster (72) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of 125 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Seventeen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 84-year old female from Hancock County, a 70-year old female from Logan County, a 61-year old female from Roane County, an 80-year old female from Marion County, a 71-year old male from Marion County, an 86-year old female from Marion County, a 72-year old male from Brooke County, a 73-year old female from Monroe County, a 62-year old female from Raleigh County, a 59-year old female from Harrison County, an 88-year old female from Raleigh County, a 93-year old female from Marion County, a 73-year old male from Raleigh County, an 84-year old male from Wood County, a 63-year old female from Kanawha County, an 87-year old female from Kanawha County, and a 52-year old female from Logan County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of September 21, 2021, there are currently 17,435 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 17 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 3,441 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

More than 955 residents are hospitalized with the virus (83% unvaccinated, 17% vaccinated), with 292 currently in intensive care (87% unvaccinated, 13% vaccinated) and 164 on a ventilator (91% unvaccinated, 9% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 10.99%.

A total of 935,803 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.  That’s about 52% of the state.
