Active COVID-19 cases decline, but hospitalizations hit record high in West Virginia

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 12,843 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 2,647 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (132), Barbour (126), Lewis (99), Randolph (153) and Webster (55) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of 19 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Fifteen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 87-year old male from Kanawha County, an 80-year old male from Kanawha County, a 93-year old male from Kanawha County, an 82-year old female from Jefferson County, an 84-year old female from Berkeley County, an 89-year old male from Raleigh County, a 92-year old male from Brooke County, an 81-year old female from Wood County, a 99-year old male from Brooke County, a 93-year old female from Berkeley County, a 104-year old female from Kanawha County, a 62-year old female from Berkeley County, a 71-year old male from Monroe County, an 81-year old female from Kanawha County, and a 70-year old female from Cabell County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of February 1, 2022, there are currently 12,843 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 15 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,778 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 1,100 residents are hospitalized with the virus (68% unvaccinated, 32% vaccinated), with 239 currently in intensive care (76% unvaccinated, 24% vaccinated) and 120 on a ventilator (85% unvaccinated, 15% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 21.56%.

A total of 951,361 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 53% of the state. Of those, 382,874 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
