West Virginia reports 285 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, three additional deaths

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 285 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (1), Barbour (5), Lewis (4), Randolph (6) and Webster (1) counties.

A total of 35 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR.

Three additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 60-year old female from Fayette County, an 86-year old female from McDowell County, and a 74-year old female from Gilmer County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 21, 2021, there have been 2,870,079 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 159,735 total cases and 2,772 deaths,” according to a press release.

About 5,791 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 151,172 people have recovered and 2,772 have died. The daily percent positive was 3.53%.

A total of 711,411 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said. That’s about 40% of the state.
