Photos: First half goals propel Lady ‘Cats over West Virginia State

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Wesleyan (3-1-0) women’s soccer team scored twice in the first half and held strong to defeat West Virginia State (1-3-1) by a final score of 2-0 on Sunday, March 28 at Ross Field.

In her second start of the season, Orian Bar fired a long shot that got by the Yellow Jacket goalkeeper in the 15th minute for an early 1-0 edge.

Wesleyan scored again in the 39th minute on a free kick from Natalie Pireu. She launched a laser as the ball found its way into the top right corner of the net for her second goal of the season. The Lady Bobcats led 2-0 at halftime.

The Yellow Jackets had a prime opportunity to get on the board in the 49th minute. Naomi Waithira broke free and sent a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar.

Bailey Heubi (two saves) and Ally Moore (three saves) combined for the clean sheet in goal for Wesleyan.

WVWC has a quick turnaround as the Lady Bobcats return to Ross Field on Tuesday (March 30) to play host to Alderson Broaddus at 3 p.m.
