BUCKHANNON – A three-car collision on Main Street Friday may have been caused by a medical issue.
The incident occurred at 4:15 p.m. Jan. 15 on Main Street near its four-way intersection with North Spring Street. Officer Angel McCauley with the Buckhannon Police Department was the investigating officer and was assisted by Deputy Dewaine Linger with the Upshur County Sheriff’s office.
According to the report filed at the Buckhannon Police Department on Jan. 15, 2021, McCauley responded with the Buckhannon Fire Department, Upshur County EMS and the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office to a three-vehicle collision on Main Street with possible entrapment.
Upon arrival, McCauley observed a three-vehicle wreck that appeared to have been caused by the driver of a 2019 silver Kia Sorento, Amanda Parker, 35, of Weston, accidentally accelerating due to a possible medical issue and crashing into a 2010 red Chevrolet Impala being driven by Cheryl Wilt, 63, of Buckhannon. The impact then reportedly caused Wilt’s vehicle to hit the rear end of a 2016 red Ford Escape being driven by Melissa Vaughan, 47, of Buckhannon.
The Kia Sorento sustained front-end damage; the Chevrolet Impala sustained both front and rear-end damage; and the Ford Escape had only rear-end damage, the report states.
Vaughan’s vehicle was being pushed into the intersection by the impact of the other two vehicles while at a dead stop, McCauley noted in the report.
McCauley was unable to obtain a statement from Parker, but her daughter said she had experienced a medical issue, which caused her to accelerate the vehicle. According to the report, Vaughn was transported to the hospital via Upshur EMS.
