More than 200 West Virginians have died from COVID-19 in the last week as state tops 100,000 cases Sunday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Sunday that 1,434 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

The DHHR also reported 12 additional deaths Sunday, including two from Upshur County. For the first time, more than 200 West Virginians have died from the virus in a single week.

“Each tragic death reported is a solemn reminder of the seriousness of this disease,” said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary, in a press release.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (8), Lewis (9), Randolph (123) and Webster (4) counties.

The DHHR removed 34 cases from Barbour County, which had reported more than 200 new cases on Saturday. Those were likely reassigned due to Tygarts Valley Regional Jail, which has a Barbour County address but is located in Randolph County. The jail is in the midst of a large outbreak, with more than 300 total cases active as of Sunday.

A total of 340 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR.

The 12 deaths reported Sunday include:

• a 77-year old male from Hardy County,
• an 89-year old male from Upshur County,
• a 52-year old male from Logan County,
• a 74-year old female from Raleigh County,
• an 84-year old male from Kanawha County,
• an 89-year old male from Harrison County,
• a 66-year old male from Boone County,
• an 81-year old female from Marion County,
• a 70-year old male from McDowell County,
• a 77-year old male from Hampshire County,
• an 80-year old male from Upshur County,
• a 78-year old male from Boone County.

“The DHHR reports as of January 10, 2021, there have been 1,643,013 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 101,212 total cases and 1,582 deaths,” according to a press release.

About 29,248 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 70,382 people have recovered and 1,582 have died. The daily percent positive was 8.56%.

A total of 90,645 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in West Virginia, the DHHR said. About 2.5 million doses are required to vaccinate 70% of the state’s population, since each vaccine requires two doses.
