Upshur County reports record-high 32 new COVID-19 cases on Christmas Day

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Christmas Day that 1,597 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State, including 32 in Upshur County, a record single-day increase.

Twenty additional deaths have been attributed to the disease.

“As we celebrate this holiday, many West Virginians have lost loved ones, have loved ones who are sick, or may be sick themselves, while others are coping with separation from friends and family as we stay distanced,” said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary, in a press release. “Our hearts go out to those who have been affected by this pandemic and to those who may be experiencing increased anxiety or depression. Please check on your family or friends.”

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (32), Barbour (11), Lewis (18), Randolph (20) and Webster (4) counties.

A total of 128 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR. Friday’s update:

  • Added 17 probable cases and 21 confirmed cases on Dec. 24
  • Removed three probable cases and added two confirmed cases on Dec. 23
  • Removed seven probable cases and added two confirmed cases to Dec. 22

Twenty additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR:

  • a 67-year old male from Marshall County,
  • a 70-year old male from Barbour County,
  • a 73-year old male from Preston County,
  • a 78-year old female from Marion County,
  • a 70-year old female from Hancock County,
  • an 85-year old female from Hancock County,
  • a 68-year old male from Cabell County,
  • a 68-year old male from Kanawha County,
  • a 77-year old female from Mason County,
  • a 92-year old female from Boone County,
  • an 84-year old male from Mineral County,
  • an 87-year old female from Marion County,
  • an 84-year old female from Hancock County,
  • an 85-year old male from Kanawha County,
  • an 86-year old female from Greenbrier County,
  • a 63-year old female from Raleigh County,
  • a 91-year old male from Berkeley County,
  • a 51-year old male from Berkeley County,
  • a 65-year old female from Berkeley County,
  • an 86-year old female from Randolph County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of December 25, 2020, there have been 1,435,906 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 78,836 total cases and 1,247 deaths,” according to a press release.

About 23,860 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 53,739 people have recovered and 1,247 have died. The daily percent positive was 8%.
