Death of Upshur County man confirmed in Wednesday’s DHHR COVID-19 update

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 215 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State, including a net increase of two cases in Upshur County.

The DHHR also confirmed that the death first announced Tuesday by the Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department was a 76-year old male from Upshur County. A total of 413 West Virginians have died to COVID-19 so far, with nearly half of those deaths occurring in September and October.

Wednesday’s DHHR report removed two probable cases from Upshur County’s totals, one from Oct. 17 and one from Oct. 18. It added a confirmed case on Oct. 18 as well as two probable cases and one confirmed case on Oct. 20.

After two days in the red, Upshur County’s infection rate fell to the orange alert category on Wednesday’s daily map. The county remains gold in percent positivity, which also dropped slightly.

A total of 55 COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR. More than 5,000 cases are currently active throughout West Virginia.

Statewide, four additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 62-year old male from Wetzel County, an 87-year old female from Cabell County, an 85-year old female from Harrison County, and an 89-year old female from Cabell County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 10 a.m., October 21, 2020, there have been 695,527 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 20,734 total cases and 413 deaths,” according to a press release.

New cases were reported Wednesday in Berkeley, Boone, Braxton, Cabell, Doddridge, Fayette, Grant, Greenbrier, Hampshire, Hancock, Jackson, Jefferson, Kanawha, Lewis, Lincoln, Logan, Marion, Marshall, Mason, Mercer, Mineral, Mingo, Monongalia, Monroe, Morgan, Nicholas, Ohio, Pendleton, Preston, Putnam, Raleigh, Randolph, Roane, Summers, Taylor, Tucker, Tyler, Upshur, Wayne, Webster, Wetzel, Wirt, Wood and Wyoming counties.

About 5,106 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 15,215 people have recovered and 413 have died. The daily percent positive was 3.36%.
