Four deaths, 147 COVID-19 cases reported in West Virginia on Wednesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 147 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

Four additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 59-year old female from Harrison County, a 69-year old female from Harrison County, a 62-year old female from Jackson County, and an 87-year old female from Monroe County.

In Upshur County, the DHHR reported one new confirmed case on Wednesday, taking the total to 49 confirmed cases. The Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department, however, is reporting 50 confirmed cases. The state dashboard often trails local reports.

One probable case in Upshur County, dating back months, has been removed after an investigation. Another probable case from the same timeframe remains, meaning the DHHR is now reporting 49 confirmed and one probable case for a total of 50 Upshur County cases.

Eight cases in Upshur County are active, according to the DHHR.

Upshur remains yellow on the state’s county alert map. Pocahontas County, which reported 10 new cases Wednesday, move to orange.

The daily percentage of tests coming back positive statewide surged to the highest level since April at 7.78% positive. Active cases also reached a new record at 2,806.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 10 a.m., on September 9, 2020, there have been 463,686 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 11,808 total cases and 254 deaths,” according to a press release.

In his virtual press briefing Tuesday, Gov. Jim Justice announced that COVID-19 cases have been reported in 11 schools around the state — six schools in Kanawha County, two schools in Brooke County, and one school each in Lincoln, Pleasants and Mingo counties.

Justice did not identify how many cases were at those schools, or if they involved students or staff. Some of those counties are currently virtual-only.

There are also 34 outbreaks in long-term care facilities, the governor said.

New cases were reported Wednesday in Berkeley, Boone, Brooke, Cabell, Calhoun, Clay, Fayette, Greenbrier, Harrison, Jefferson, Kanawha, Logan, Marion, Marshall, Mineral, Mingo, Monongalia, Ohio, Pocahontas, Putnam, Raleigh, Summers, Tucker, Upshur and Wyoming counties.

About 2,806 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 8,748 people have recovered and 254 have died.
