New Upshur County COVID-19 case reported Saturday as parents statewide await school reopening map

Another new case of COVID-19 was reported in Upshur County on Saturday, one of 252 cases identified throughout the Mountain State, according to the the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.

For the first time since August 20, no new deaths were reported. Over that period, 77 West Virginians have died of COVID-19.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 10 a.m., on September 5, 2020, there have been 453,285 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 11,289 total cases and 243 deaths,” according to a press release.

With the start of school just three days away, many parents are anxiously awaiting the updated county map that is set to be released Saturday night at 9 p.m.

West Virginia is coming off it’s worst week ever with more than 1,300 new cases reported since last Saturday, and two key counties — Kanawha and Monongalia — will almost certainly be unable to open schools or participate in athletic events over the coming week. As of Friday, Monongalia was red and Kanawha orange, and the counties reported 48 and 68 new cases Saturday, respectively.

With more than 700 West Virginia University students currently in quarantine, the fate of Morgantown area schools is largely in the hands of the state’s largest university. To date, WVU has reported more than 450 cases of COVID-19, both those identified in campus testing and those self-reported by students.

New cases were reported Saturday in Berkeley, Boone, Brooke, Cabell, Clay, Doddridge, Fayette, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Marion, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Monongalia, Monroe, Nicholas, Ohio, Pocahontas, Preston, Putnam, Raleigh, Roane, Taylor, Upshur, Wayne, Wood and Wyoming counties.

About 2,530 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 8,516 people have recovered and 243 have died. The daily percent positive was 5.44%.
