A total of 65 new cases of COVID-19 were identified in West Virginia on Sunday, according to the Department of Health and Human Resources. Two additional deaths were also reported.
“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 5 p.m., on April 19, 2020, there have been 21,675 laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 890 positive, 20,785 negative and 20 deaths,” a press release from the DHHR said.
Nearly half the new cases came from Jackson County, which is dealing with an outbreak at a nursing home. Governor Jim Justice said earlier this week that issues in that county were the impetus behind his order that all residents and staff at nursing homes statewide be tested or retested for COVID-19.
The two new deaths are a 69-year old male from Hampshire County and an 80-year-old male from Kanawha County, according to the DHHR.
Despite the number of new cases, the daily percentage of positive test results dropped below 4 percent for the first time in more than a week, with about 3.5 percent of the 1,881 new tests Sunday coming back positive for COVID-19.
The DHHR did not update the hospitalization and recovery rates over the weekend.
New cases were reported Sunday in Berkeley, Cabell, Fayette, Harrison, Jackson, Kanawha, Monongalia, Monroe, Nicholas, Roane, Wayne and Wood counties.
