Wesleyan ranks among top Master’s in Creating Writing programs in the U.S.

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan College’s low-residency MFA in Creative Writing has been recognized as a top ranked institution by Intelligent.com.

Wesleyan was listed among 20 other competing public and private institutions across the nation. The student-focused comprehensive research guide is based on an assessment of 1,604 accredited colleges and universities.

Each program is evaluated based on curriculum quality, graduation rate, reputation, and post-graduate employment.

The 2020 rankings are calculated through a unique scoring system which includes student engagement, potential return on investment, and leading third party evaluations. Intelligent.com analyzed 164 programs, on a scale of 0 to 100, with only 20 institutions making it to the final list.

The methodology used an algorithm which collects and analyzes multiple rankings into one score to easily compare each college and university’s degree program.

“We have worked for nearly a decade to build a close-knit community of writers who do not necessarily happen to live near one another,” said Doug Van Gundy, director of the MFA program in creative writing and associate professor of English. “It is an honor to be recognized for the rigor of our program, the intensity of our residencies and the quality of our faculty.”

The recognition of Wesleyan’s MFA program is one of many national accolades the College has received this fall. Most recently, Wesleyan was the only West Virginia college or university listed in Forbes’s Grateful Grad Index.

In addition, WVWC was named a “Best Value” school, a “Best Regional University in the South,” and a top performer in Social Mobility in U.S. News & World Report’s 2020 edition of “Best Colleges.” Wesleyan is the only in-state school to be ranked a “Best Value” school for nine consecutive years.

Kiplinger’s also listed Wesleyan in their “Best College Values,” and WVWC has received the highest in-state ranking in The Wall Street Journal for the past two years. Wesleyan is also a Best Southeastern College in The Princeton Review and has been named in both 2019 and 2020 as a “Hidden Gem in the Northeast” by College Raptor.
