The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement Wednesday morning warning West Virginia residents that dry conditions and gusty winds will result in a very high fire risk throughout the day.
In a statement issued in coordination with the W.Va. Division of Forestry, the NWS says, “The fire danger today across southern and central West Virginia is high to very high. Dry conditions, along with gusty winds, are expected this afternoon. Open burning of any type is considered extremely dangerous.”
In addition, the statement warns residents to “be very careful of heat and sparks while operating any equipment and avoid smoking in wildland areas.”
According to the NWS, state law prohibits burning from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 31.
