Update 1 p.m. — Wrecks continue to be reported, especially along Route 33, including in both Lewis and Barbour counties.

The Buckhannon Fire Department said they had responded to four wrecks, all vehicles in the ditch. The city police also handled several calls of cars that had slid of the road.

Both departments warned drivers to use extreme caution when traveling — and to stay off the roads entirely if possible. Route 33 and other well-traveled roads remain treacherous.

Sgt. Mark Stewart with the BPD said this when asked what advice he would give drivers: “Don’t. Stay home.”

A winter storm warning remains in effect for Upshur County until 7 p.m. Friday night.

Sheriff’s deputies and state police officers from the Buckhannon detachment were not in the office at 1 p.m. as they were actively responding to incidents along Route 33 and elsewhere.

Original story — A handful of wrecks have been reported in Upshur County as snow showers picked up Friday morning. At about 9 a.m., a tractor-trailer jack-knifed on Route 33 east-bound near the Morton Avenue exit, delaying traffic on that stretch of road.

Another minor wreck was reported on South Locust Street, and a car went off the road on Route 33 near the Kesling Mill intersection. Just after 11 a.m., a vehicle was reported in the ditch on Morton Avenue.

So far, no major injuries have been reported.

Regional travel is also treacherous, with numerous wrecks reported from Morgantown south. A tractor-trailer on I-79 south of Weston wrecked onto its side at about 11 a.m., snarling traffic along that stretch of road.

This post will be updated as additional information becomes available.
