MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sixteen WVU Medicine hospitals have been awarded West Virginia Hospital Association (WVHA) Commitment to Excellence Honors Program Gold Awards – the highest level – for their ongoing commitment to the pursuit of excellence in quality and patient safety.
According to the WVHA, “West Virginia’s hospitals seek to establish and maintain trust among providers, policymakers, and the public through actions, sensitivity, professionalism, and community-minded commitment to service. The Commitment to Excellence Honors Program is a way hospitals can be recognized for the outstanding work they do in pursuit of these goals.”
The objectives of the Honors Program are to:
- Reward successful efforts to develop and promote quality improvement activities.
- Inspire hospitals to be leaders in improving the health of West Virginians.
- Raise awareness of nationally accepted standards of care that are proven to enhance patient outcomes.
Gold Awards are presented to those that have successfully implemented work in a variety of topic areas, including policy modification, new program offerings, dedicated staff time, staff and patient education and/or measurement and results.
The WVU Medicine hospitals recognized with Gold Awards are:
- Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg
- Braxton County Memorial Hospital in Gassaway
- Camden Clark Medical Center in Parkersburg
- Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg
- Jackson General Hospital in Ripley
- Jefferson Medical Center in Ranson
- Potomac Valley Hospital in Keyser
- Princeton Community Hospital
- Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Glen Dale
- St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon
- Summersville Regional Medical Center
- Thomas Hospitals in Charleston
- United Hospital Center in Bridgeport
- WVU Hospitals, which includes J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown and Fairmont Medical Center
- Wetzel County Hospital in New Martinsville
- Wheeling Hospital
“Achieving gold status in the West Virginia Hospital Association’s Commitment to Excellence Honors Program reflects an extraordinary commitment to quality improvement and patient safety. These hospitals have gone beyond planning to implement national best practices that make a real difference in the health of West Virginians,” Michael Stevens, M.D., chief quality officer for the WVU Health System, said.

The awards will be presented during the WVHA Annual Meeting, which will be held September 30-October 2 at The Greenbrier.
