BUCKHANNON – Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania has donated $25,000 to Feed My Sheep, a local nonprofit that provides families in need with food and other essential supplies.
Monique McIntosh, the president and chief executive officer of Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania, drove down to Feed My Sheep’s location on Brushy Fork Road to present them with the check on Aug. 18.
“People don’t realize our territory extends into West Virginia; we’re headquartered in Pittsburgh, but we actually serve more counties in West Virginia than we do in southwestern Pennsylvania,” McIntosh said of the Goodwill region.
For over a year, Goodwill has invested in North Central West Virginia by supporting nonprofits already serving their communities.
“This partnership we felt aligned with our mission. We have a particular focus on workforce development; that’s how we envision individuals and families achieving economic opportunities,” McIntosh said. “It’s hard for a family to enter the workforce if they’re food insecure, if they’re unhoused, if they’re having a tough time returning to society, if they were incarcerated at a period in time in their life. Feed My Sheep has a boots-on-the-ground operation that resonates with Goodwill and very much aligns with our mission. They’re providing the work support benefits that are needed for individuals to sustain themselves.”
Lisa George, director of Feed My Sheep, said they have already spent most of those funds to improve their operations.
“We got two new huge commercial refrigerators, two new commercial freezers, one of the Conex boxes, a convection professional oven, two years of pantry software, and twelve 5,000-pound storage shelves,” George said. “I still have a little bit more that I will be spending, but we haven’t decided on what just yet.”
George said she has already begun preparing for the holiday season, and Feed My Sheep is still looking for a larger facility.
“Our Christmas store will be coming up, and that’s a big thing. I will be getting applications out probably in the next month or so for people to start signing up for that,” George said. “Then we have the rest of our programs going on like normal.”
