Mary Edith “Sally” Young Waddell

Mary Edith “Sally” Young Waddell of Myrtle Beach, SC, and formerly of Buckhannon, WV, passed away peacefully at her home on April 12, 2026, at the age of 83.

Born on November 24, 1942, in Glen Dale, WV, she was a daughter of the late Pat and Betty Young.

She is survived by her long-time companion, Dr. John David Janney; children, Ralph B. “Bo” Waddell and Elizabeth Patton Waddell; cherished granddaughter, Brooklyn Waddell; sister, Suzanne Hyre and husband, Dick; brother, G.O. Young and wife, Marie; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, John Patton Young; sister, Camella Young McCord (Steve); and nephew, John Aaron Hyre.

Sally was a graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School and West Virginia Wesleyan College, dedicating 27 years of her life to her career as an educator in both Lewis and Upshur counties. She retired, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, influence, and life preparation for her students.

Growing up, she enjoyed life on the Buckhannon River at the family’s summer camp, enjoying time with her siblings and friends swimming, sunbathing, and motorboating. Later, while raising her two children, she developed loyal friendships with many and will always be remembered for her endearing love of family.

Sally was a member of Chapter A, P.E.O. Sisterhood of West Virginia, where she formed lasting friendships and continued to support the organization’s message.

In her later years, she found joy in life’s simple pleasures, sharing time with John as they traveled, exploring new sites and new dining experiences, visiting friends, and, most of all, spending time with her family.

Sally’s warmth, kindness, and vibrant spirit made her the heart of every gathering. She leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue to live on in all who knew her.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held Saturday, August 22, 2026, at the South Buckhannon Mission Church, 144 Randolph St., Buckhannon, WV 26201, with Pastor Ed Lowther officiating. Friends will gather at noon, and the service will begin at 2 p.m.
