Mannington man killed in industrial accident at Buckhannon’s Appalachian Forest Products

The Upshur County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal workplace accident at Appalachian Forest Products in Buckhannon that killed a Marion County man.

Deputies responded to a report of an industrial accident at the facility at about 3 p.m. on June 9, according to the sheriff’s office. Emergency personnel found Michael D. Martin, 73, of Mannington, who had suffered fatal injuries. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene.

The circumstances of the accident remain under investigation. The sheriff’s office said it is working with workplace safety and regulatory agencies to determine what led to the incident. No additional information is being released while the investigation continues.

Appalachian Forest Products, which operates as AFP Logs and Lumber, is one of the region’s largest hardwood producers. Founded in the late 1980s and headquartered in Buckhannon, the company processes hardwood logs and lumber at a complex that includes two sawmills and ships to customers in more than 30 countries.

“The sheriff’s office extends its condolences to the family, friends and coworkers of Mr. Martin during this difficult time,” the department said.
