Basketball Lady Bucs draw Hurricane in south regional opener on Feb. 27

VIENNA — The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission has released brackets for the regional round of the girls’ basketball playoffs. Seeds were voted upon by coaches within their regions.

In Class AAAA, Buckhannon-Upshur (5-16) earned the 10th seed in the South Region.

They will play No. 7 seed Hurricane (7-13) Friday, Feb. 27 on the road in the first round. The two teams met during the regular season and the Lady Bucs dropped a 45-36 decision at home back on Jan. 10. The winner will play No. 2 seed Parkersburg South on Wed. March 4.

The tournament will be single-elimination and four teams from each region (North and South) will advance to the state tournament from Class AAAA.

New mural to celebrate local history

The Upshur County Commission has signed a contract with artist Tom Acosta for a new mural on the county maintenance building near Main Street. Backed in part by a $5,000 state tourism grant, the $11,500 project is expected to be completed by May 1.
