Updated with Celebration of Life information.
Charles James Poundstone Jr., age 68, of Buckhannon, WV, passed away peacefully at his home on January 12, 2026.
Born on September 10, 1957, in Buckhannon, WV, Charlie was the son of the late Charles James Poundstone and Elizabeth Jean Zickefoose Poundstone. He graduated from Buckhannon-Upshur High School and went on to attend Alderson-Broaddus College.
In his younger years, Charlie had a deep love for playing sports and was known for his competitive spirit and energy on the field. As he grew older, he became an avid sports fan and could often be found cheering on his favorite local teams — WVU and B-UHS.
On August 27, 2001, he married the love of his life, Catherine Strader, and together they built a life full of love, laughter, and family. Charlie never met a stranger. Known for his gift of storytelling and generous spirit, he would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need.
He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, and he cherished time spent with his grandchildren more than anything. His grandchildren would share that Charlie wanted to be outside and enjoy life with them – walking, riding bikes, or watching the older kids play sports. He always joked with them, famously saying that he “was the smartest kid in second grade, two years in a row;” anything he could do to make them smile.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Catherine Poundstone; his children: Sasha (Ryan) Landis of Wyoming, Brittany Poignée of Parkersburg, Charles J. Poundstone III, Dayna (Ryan) Keevan of Charlotte, NC, Joshua (Amy) Lang of Jericho, VT, and Brieanne (Scott) Roman of Columbus, OH. He was a proud grandfather to Raab Poignée, Lane Landis, Zhi Poignée, Hadley McKinniss, Delaney Roman, Boden & Maddox Roman, Olivia Keevan, Levon Lang and Sunny Lang.
Charlie is also survived by his sisters Elizabeth (David) Lee of Buckhannon, WV, and Jane Poundstone (John) Sharp of Slaty Fork, WV; and his brother John (Greta) Poundstone of Raleigh, NC. He leaves behind his nieces and nephews: Rachel (Luke) Poling, Macon Poundstone, and Hunter Poundstone. A very special part of his extended family was Margaret (Gene) Sullenger and their family, and Patricia (Mike & Lauren) Strader, who all meant so much to him.
A celebration of Charlie’s life will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 1 p.m. at the Daily Grind, 20 Raella Lane in Buckhannon. Please join the family as they gather to celebrate the life of Charlie and the many ways he touched everyone’s hearts. This will be a time to remember, reflect, share stories, and honor the love, laughter, and memories Charlie leaves behind.
Rather than a formal service, this gathering is meant to feel like Charlie. Warm, meaningful, and centered on connection. Whether you knew him for years or crossed paths briefly, you are welcome to come and be part of remembering a life that mattered.
Online condolences may be made to the family at www.polingstclair.com. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
