Fred Brooks Garden Club launches strawberry-themed Yard of the Month contest

The Fred Brooks Garden Club has launched a strawberry-themed Yard of the Month contest, encouraging Buckhannon residents to showcase creative strawberry displays and landscaping for a chance to win recognition during the Strawberry Festival.
The 2023 winner: Brad and Jennifer Lemons, 12 W. Lincoln Street

Just in time for the 83rd West Virginia Strawberry Festival, the Fred Brooks Garden Club has launched a “Yard of the Month” contest for residents within Buckhannon city limits.

Residents are encouraged to show off their strawberry pride by decorating their yards with strawberry-themed displays. Judges will be out the week of May 5 and select one yard as the Strawberry Yard of the Month. To be considered, decorations must be in place by Thursday, May 8.

Judges will look for tasteful landscaping, neat and well-tended yards with a mix of flowers and shrubbery, and a clear focus on strawberry decorations. All judges look for evidence that the owner takes pride in how their yard looks.

The regular Yard of the Month season runs through June, July and August. Anyone who won between 2022 and 2024 must wait three years after their win to compete again. In July, there is an additional Red, White & Blue Yard of the Month award. The club makes selections across its five voting districts and also chooses one business winner for June, July and August.

FBGC appreciates all citizens and businesses who work hard to make Buckhannon a more beautiful city. Happy gardening, everyone!
