Glenville State University recently welcomed alumni Major General William Crane of the West Virginia National Guard for a presentation on leadership. The event was hosted by Glenville State University Military and Family Support.
Major General Crane focused on leadership, emphasizing the differences between management outputs and leadership outcomes. He discussed how individuals can be motivated by inspiration just as effectively as by persuasion, often resulting in better outcomes.
A graduate of Glenville State College in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Crane earned a Master’s in Communication from West Virginia University. As the Adjutant General for the State of West Virginia, he provides command guidance and vision to the West Virginia Army and Air National Guard, which includes over 6,500 Citizen Soldiers, Airmen and civilians employed through the West Virginia Military Authority.
Major General Crane’s military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Multi-National Forces-Iraq Shoulder Sleeve Insignia-Former Wartime Service, Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal with Service Star, Army Service Ribbon, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and M Device, West Virginia Meritorious Service Medal, West Virginia Commendation Medal, West Virginia Minuteman Ribbon and the West Virginia Service Ribbon.
