Waggy runs six as Bucs place fourth at Bearcat Invitational

Upshur County’s Oct. 12–18 sports calendar features football, soccer, volleyball, golf, cross country and tennis. Highlights include Buckhannon-Upshur hosting East Fairmont on Friday and West Virginia Wesleyan competing in MEC golf and regional tennis championships.

Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School’s Little Bucs took second at the Mid-Mountain Cross Country Championships, placing three runners in the top 10. The Little Lady Bucs finished fifth, led by Audrey Johnston’s 11th-place finish.

A last-minute penalty kick handed Buckhannon-Upshur a heartbreaking 2-1 Senior Night loss to Elkins. Despite outshooting the Tigers 17-8, the Lady Bucs fell short, but coach Rosie Shackleford praised their heart and resolve.

Elkins spoiled Buckhannon-Upshur’s Senior Night with a 3-0 shutout, halting the Bucs’ mid-season surge. Coach Dalton Auvil called the performance a wake-up call as B-U prepares for two road matches to close the regular season.

About 2,000 newborn and postpartum supply kits are expected to reach West Virginia families through a federal program’s expansion, according to the Governor’s Office.

The Colonial Arts Center is seeking funds for equipment and a computer lab to help local musicians record and edit original work. It is also looking for a sponsor for Local Music Night.
