Wrestling Bucs place ninth at Brooke Classic

WELLSBURG – The Buckhannon-Upshur wrestling Bucs competed in the one-day Brooke Classic this past Saturday.

They finished in ninth place out of 13 teams with 118.5 points. The Bucs finished ahead of regional foes Brooke, John Marshall and Morgantown and just one point behind Wheeling Park.

Erie Cathedral Prep (Pa.) won the team title with 210 points while Spring Mills was second with 181 points and Fox Chapel (Pa.) was third with 168.5 points.

Buckhannon-Upshur had several strong performances with Ian Cornett (113 pounds) and Liam Garcia (120 pounds) getting runner-up honors, Jeremy Jett (103 pounds) placing third, Oscar Blonn (215 pounds) finishing fourth and Andrew McDowell (138 pounds) taking fifth.

Cornett received a first-round bye, won by fall over teammate Bri Howes in the quarterfinals, pinned Colin O’Rourke of Erie Cathedral Prep in the semifinals but dropped the championship match by pin to Fox Chapel’s Landon Funk.

Garcia received a first-round bye, pinned Cole Raines of Oak Glem in quarterfinals, pinned Jacob Carman of Wheeling Park, but lost a 10-5 decision to Connor Smith of Seneca Valley in the title scrap.

Jett won his opener by pin over Aydin Shipley of Seneca Valley but lost in the quarterfinals by fall to Zac Dodt of Thomas Worthington. He rebounded to pin Jordan Tomsic of Oak Glenn in the first consolation round and pinned Nathan Pasco of Oak Glenn in the consolation semis. He then won a 14-2 major decision over Dodt in the third-place match.

Blonn pinned Quentin Scott of Wheeling Park in his opening match but lost by pin to Thomas Wuycheck of Seneca Valley in the quarterfinals. He came back to pin Isaac Swauger of John Marshall in the consolation opener and pinned Max Spaulding of Erie Cathedral Prep in the consolation semis. He lost the third-place match by fall to John Mallery of Seneca Valley.

McDowell pinned Trevor Bruno of Erie Cathedral Prep in his opener and won an 8-2 decision over Josh Alexander of Fox Chapel in the quarterfinals. He lost a 10-0 major decision to Cal Beading of Steubenville and lost a 6-4 decision to Blake Messick of Spring Mills. He rebounded to claim fifth place with a 10-2 major decision over Youssef Abdelsalam of Fox Chapel.

The Bucs will be back in action Wednesday in a quad at Parkersburg with Parkersburg, George Washington and Spring Valley.
