Friday’s forecast still predicts mostly rain this weekend in Upshur County

CHARLESTON — A winter weather system that will impact West Virginia this weekend is likely to bring mostly rain to Upshur County, according to the latest projections Friday morning.

“A weekend disturbance will yield at least minor travel impacts along the mountains starting on Saturday,” the National Weather Service said. “Accumulating snow and freezing rain will be possible along the mountains and mostly rain or a wintry mix for the rest of the area. Precipitation chances will linger into Sunday with additional mountain snow showers and a rain/snow mix in the lowlands.”

Upshur County is expected to receive less than an inch of snow, with the high temperature of 41 degrees on Saturday and 39 on Sunday yielding mostly rain during the daytime hours.

“A weekend system could bring periods of snow and rain/snow mix including patchy freezing rain Saturday morning before transitioning to all rain by early Saturday afternoon,” the NWS notes in their latest hazardous weather outlook.

The counties to the east of Upshur County should see higher snowfall amounts, with parts of Randolph, Pocahontas, Webster and Nicholas counties under a winter weather advisory through Sunday.

“Mixed precipitation expected,” the advisory says of those mountain counties. “Total snow accumulations of up to 4 inches and ice accumulations of around one-tenth of an inch. Plan on slippery road conditions.”

The precipitation is set to move out of the area Sunday night. Monday is forecast to be partly sunny in Upshur County with a high of 42 degrees. Rain is set to return Wednesday as temperatures increase into the mid-50s.
