Wesleyan Choral ensembles to present “A Bernstein Celebration” Nov. 14

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — West Virginia Wesleyan College’s Choral Ensembles, under the direction of Dr. R. Daniel Hughes, director of choral activities and associate professor of music, will present “A Bernstein Celebration” on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Wesley Chapel. Admission is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature the Wesleyan Singers, the Concert Chorale, Concentus Vocum, and the Chanticleer Children’s Chorus Chamber Ensemble, as well as student and faculty instrumentalists.
The performance is a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein, an American composer conductor, author, music lecturer, and pianist. The Wesleyan Choral Music will perform selections from his Missa Brevis, Chichester Psalms, and Mass: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers.

Dr. Hughes is also the artistic director for the Chanticleer Children’s Chorus in West Virginia. He is active as adjudicator and clinician. In conjunction with the American Choral Director’s Association, he has presented several reading and interest sessions, and prepared and conducted choirs and singers for national, regional and state conferences. Dr. Hughes received a bachelor of arts in vocal performance from Otterbein College, masters of music in choral conduction from the Eastman School of Music, and his doctor of musical arts degree in choral music at the University of Illinois.

West Virginia Wesleyan College is a member of the National Association of Schools of Music and is approved by the West Virginia Department of Education. The department offers a bachelor of arts in music that may include an applied music or theory emphasis, a bachelor of music education and a minor in music. In addition to the many choral groups, the department also features a big band and small jazz ensembles, wind ensemble, and marching band. Wesleyan offers performing arts scholarships for both music and non-music majors.
