TENNERTON – Zach Calef-Boring pitched a complete game to lead the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers to a 6-3 home win over the Grafton Bearcats in a Big 10 Conference clash Monday night.
Calef-Boring gave up just two earned runs on five hits while striking out six.
“Zach settled in and threw a great game for us,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Adam Squires.
Isaac Lough hit a solo home run in the top of the first and Austin Mayle hit one-run single to stake Grafton to an early 2-0 lead.
The Bucs answered with a run in their half of the inning Calef-Boring led off with a double, stole third and scored on a Grafton miscue.
Grafton scored an unearned run in the top of the second on a pair of Buckhannon-Upshur errors for a 3-1 lead.
Calef-Boring kept Grafton off the scoreboard the rest of the game.
The Bucs tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the second when Ryan Snyder drew a walk and later scored on an error and Clint Crites doubled and scored on a single by Calef-Boring.
Buckhannon-Upshur took their first lead in the bottom of the third when Ian Donnen singled and scored on a single by Snyder.
The Bucs tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth when Calef-Boring singled and scored on a Grafton mistake and Landon Marple scored Elijah Bryant on a sacrifice fly.
“We had some timely hitting and we were able to fight back from an early deficit which is a good sign for us,” noted Squires.
Calef-Boring led the Buckhannon-Upshur nine-hit attack with three while Donnen and Crites each had two each.
“We had big days at the plate from all three players,” stated Squires. “We also had a big hit from Snyder. Overall it was a great time win.
The victory improved the Bucs to 4-0 on the year heading into their Tuesday battle with Liberty.
They will be back in action Thursday hosting Fairmont Senior.
First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
