Volleyball Lady ‘Cats fall to Wheeling, 3-0

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team (6-19, 2-9) was defeated by Wheeling (17-7, 10-1) on Friday (Oct. 21) night at the Rockefeller Center in Buckhannon, W.Va.

WVWC Leaders

Senior Joelle Lalla had a team-leading 12 kills and four blocks. Hope Arce-Reed had seven kills and four blocks. Payton Hefner passed 19 assists. Autumn Molenhouse led the Lady Bobcats with 12 digs.

Inside Set One
The Lady Bobcats fired out of the gates leading 4-0 to begin the first set. Following a kill from Bajramovic and a tone-setting block from Lalla and Arce-Reed, the Lady Bobcats led 6-3 and forced a Wheeling timeout. After the timeout, the Cardinals took six of the next 10 points and trailed 10-9.

Bajramovic and Arce-Reed had back-to-back kills for the Lady Bobcats and extended their lead 13-10. Wheeling battled back and won six of the next eight points and trimmed the WVWC to one, forcing a Wesleyan timeout. Following the timeout, the two teams exchanged the ensuing next 11 points before the Cardinals took their first lead of the set at 22-2.

Following the timeout, the Lady Bobcats scored two-straight points and led 23-22 before Wheeling took the final three points to win the opening set, 25-23.

Inside Set Two
Wesleyan won five of the first eight points and led 5-3. The Cardinals scored three-straight points and took their first lead of the set, 6-5. Wheeling broke away after scoring five consecutive points and led 18-13. The Cardinals claimed seven of the final 11 points and won set two, 25-17.

Inside Set Three
Neither team could pull away in the third set. After 14 possible points the score was tied 7-7. Wheeling took seven of the next 10 points and led 14-10, forcing a Wesleyan timeout. Following the timeout, the Cardinals scored six-straight points and led 22-12 before winning set three, 25-14.
