Post 7 falls in winner’s bracket clash with South Charleson

MORGANTOWN – Following their upset win over Morgantown Post 2 in the opening round of the 2022 West Virginia American Legion State Tournament, Buckhannon Post 7 wasn’t able to put up much of a fight against South Charleston Post 94 in a winner’s bracket game of the double-elimination tournament Wednesday night at Dale Miller Field.

Post 7 dropped a 23-1 decision to South Charleston in a game halted in the fifth inning on the 10-run mercy rule.

“Tonight was a tough one,” stated Buckhannon Post 7 general manager Kevin Boring. “Our energy level did not match that of last night. South Charleston is a mature, disciplined hitting team. We just dug too big of a hole to climb out of. Tonight’s game has no impact on what we have accomplished to this point.  We just need to press the rest and reset button and get mentally ready for Parkersburg tomorrow.”

South Charleston took a 10-0 lead after one inning and tallied four runs in the second inning and five more in the third for a 19-0 advantage.

Buckhannon’s lone run came in the top of the fourth when Ryan Snyder drew a one-out walk and later scored on a single by Peyton Bennett.

South Charleston tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning including a three-run home run from Isaac McCallister.

Buckhannon had six hits in the setback with Bennett leading the offense with two.

Post 7 dropped to 14-18 on the year and will now play Parkersburg Post 15 in an elimination game Thursday at 1 p.m. Parkersburg, who dropped a 1-0 contest to Morgantown on Wednesday, will enter the game with a 30-7 record.

In the other game played Wednesday, Berkley Post 14 eliminated Bridgeport Post 68 by a 5-4 score in nine innings. They will play Morgantown Post 2 in an elimination game starting at 4 p.m.

South Charleston, who improved to 22-5, will await the winner of the Parkersburg/Buckhannon contest at 7 p.m.
