B-U inducts new class into Athletic Hall of Fame

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Athletic Hall of Fame banquet was recently held for the Class of 2021 after several COVID-19 delays.

Making up the class of 2021 were David Conley, Susie Godwin Hershelman, Matthew “Matt” McDaniels, William “BJ” Phillips and Timothy “Tim” Squires.

Conley was a 1999 graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur where he was an All-State track and field performer for the Bucs and garnered high point honors at the 1999 state track meet.

He ran track and field from West Virginia Wesleyan from 1999-2003.

Godwin Hershelman was a 2010 graduate from Buckhannon-Upshur where she excelled as a four-sport athlete in soccer, basketball, track and tennis.

She earned 11 varsity letters at Buckhannon-Upshur.

McDaniels was a 1997 graduate from Buckhannon-Upshur where he was a three-sport standout in football, basketball and baseball earning nine varsity letters.

Phillips was a 1978 graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur and was a star athlete in three sports – football, basketball and baseball, where he earned seven varsity letters.

Squires was a graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur in 2010 and is considered was one of the school’s best ever swimmers.

He was a six-time state champion and was a four-time high school All-American in swimming.

He swam collegiately at WVU and qualified for the Olympic trials.
