West Virginia reports 2,236 active COVID cases, 14 new deaths on Tuesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 2,236 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 265 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (19), Barbour (32), Lewis (13), Randolph (37) and Webster (3) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of 12 active cases in the last 24 hours. 

Fourteen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 93-year old female from Berkeley County, a 62-year old female from Berkeley County, an 84-year old female from Kanawha County, a 76-year old male from Harrison County, an 83-year old female from Boone County, an 87-year old female from Berkeley County, a 79-year old male from Mingo County, a 72-year old female from Wyoming County, an 86-year old male from Ohio County, a 70-year old female from Cabell County, an 81-year old male from Berkeley County, a 72-year old female from Summers County, an 89-year old male from Raleigh County, and a 101-year old female from Wood County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 24, 2022, there are currently 2,236 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 14 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,932 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 152 residents are hospitalized with the virus (45% unvaccinated, 55% vaccinated), with 23 currently in intensive care (44% unvaccinated, 56% vaccinated) and 13 on a ventilator (54% unvaccinated, 46% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 9.51%. 

A total of 977,781 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 55% of the state. About 493,167 booster doses have been administered.
