CHARLESTON –The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc track and field team faced their toughest competition of the year in a loaded 23-team field in the 56th annual Capitol City Classic at Laidley Field.

The Lady Bucs were up to the challenge finishing a strong second with 84 points.

Huntington won the meet with 95 points while Hurricane was behind the Lady Bucs in third place with 80 points.

“I was very pleased overall with our performance,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jackie Zuliani. “The weather definitely wasn’t in our favor once again and it’s hard to get kids motivated with freezing rain and temperatures in the 30s, but they gave it their all and made it through.”

Buckhannon-Upshur claimed first place in two events.

The Lady Bucs picked up 18 points in the discus throw as Cameron Zuliani and Catherine Neely finished first and second.

Zuliani had a throw of 110-02 while Neely had a toss of 95-10.

Zuliani was also part of the other Buckhannon-Upshur win as she was a leg of the 4×102.5-meter shuttle hurdle relay team with Catherine Oliveto, Dezi Pugh and Chloe Cale who took first with a time of 1:12.78.

Zuliani claimed an individual runner-up spot finishing second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.05 and Cale placed runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 15-04.

Samantha Shreve took home a pair of thirds in the 800-meter run (2:37.50) and the 1600-meter run (5:50.11).

The foursome of Cale, Allison Andrew, Miah Reger and Shreve took third in the 4×400-meter relay (4:43.88).

The quartet of Reger, Mia Sappey, Ashley Catlin and Shreve placed fourth in the 4×800-meter run (11:07.11).

Oliveto had the other top five-finish placing fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:05.99).

“We had some firsts and seconds and a couple girls got their best times of the year despite the conditions, so that was great for them,” concluded Zuliani. “We just have to keep working hard. All that matters is getting better and wanting to be there picking up that All-State Medal the third week in May in Charleston at the State Meet.”
