JV Bucs can’t recover from rough first quarter in 58-38 loss to Hawks

TENNERTON – A brutal first quarter did in the Buckhannon-Upshur junior varsity Buccaneers against the University Hawks in a 58-38 setback Wednesday evening at the high school.

The JV Bucs found themselves down by a 28-2 score after the first quarter, getting just a basket from Bryson Johnston as their only offense.

The JV Bucs claimed the second quarter by an 11-7 margin with Jaden Westfall getting six points, Keyton Lanier and Ian Strader two each, and Shawn Blandino one.

That left B-U down 35-13 at the half.

The third quarter when to the Hawks by a 13-11 margin, with Blandino firing in six points, Nathaniel Ringer three and Johnston two for B-U.

They trailed going into the final quarter by a 45-24 score.

The JV Bucs won the fourth quarter by a 14-13 count, with Johnston scoring five points, Luke Yardley three, and Ringer, Ryan Snyder and Ryan Kelley two each.

John Coleman led the Hawks with 15 points while Rafael Barcinas tallied 14.

Johnston paced the JV Bucs with nine points. The JV Bucs are now 8-9 on the season and will be back in action Thursday, hosting Lewis County at 5:45 p.m.
