Lady ‘Cat netters picked sixth in MEC preseason poll

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — The Charleston Golden Eagles have been selected to win the 2022 Mountain East Conference women’s tennis title after a vote by the league’s coaches.

The Golden Eagles finished atop the poll with 35 points, including five first-place votes. UC, winners of the MEC Tournament title in both 2016 and last year in 2021, is the preseason favorite for the second-straight year. The Golden Eagles return three All-MEC first team honorees from last season in AlexiAnn Drouin, Prinkle Singh and Haarini Balakrishnan.

West Liberty was slotted in second with 30 points and collected two first-place votes. The Hilltoppers welcome back All-MEC first-team honoree Gemma Cliffe and second-team honoree Nathalia Valencia.

West Virginia State was picked third with 25 points, followed by Fairmont State (22), Davis & Elkins (15), West Virginia Wesleyan (14) and Frostburg State (8).

The top four teams in the regular season advance to the MEC Tournament that will be held April 30-May 1 in Charleston, W.Va.
