Bobcats Sweep Singles Titles in I-79 Event

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – A trio of Bobcats nabbed singles titles in Saturday in the final day of competition in the inaugural I-79 Challenger Tournament.

Carlos Dodero (A Flight), Alexander Lyudinovskiy (B Flight) and Daniel Moreira De Lorenzo (C Flight) went unbeaten in four matches over the two-day event.

Wesleyan joined Fairmont State, Salem University and Davis and Elkins to form the field for the tournament, which capped the fall season for the Bobcats.

Dodero got the Bobcats on the board early Saturday, claiming a 6-0, 1-6, 10-3 win over FSU’s top seed Lucas Alves in the A flight final. It was the second A flight title of the fall for the sophomore transfer from Eastern Kentucky, who also triumphed at West Liberty in September.

Lyudinovskiy did not have the drama of a tie-breaker and won his final in the B flight by a 6-2, 6-4 margin over Patryk Garwacki of Salem. All four of his matches on the weekend were straight-set victories.

De Lorenzo was an upset winner in the C flight, and had his best weekend as a Bobcat to win his first college title. De Lorenzo won an epic match over Sam Bowman of Davis and Elkins, splitting the first two sets 4-6 and 6-2 before taking the super breaker in a 12-10 battle.

Bowman saved five match points through the course of the tie-break, before De Lorenzo forced a forehand error from the Senator freshman to clinch the match.

The tournament concluded Sunday with the doubles flights.
