Sixth-seeded Buckhannon-Upshur opens postseason play Monday at No. 3 George Washington in a Class AAAA South Region quarterfinal at 8 p.m. The Bucs will need to capitalize on scarce chances and control midfield against the defensive-minded Patriots.

Lily Rice scored twice and Bella Nottingham made 17 saves as Buckhannon-Upshur blanked Woodrow Wilson 2-0 in the South Region opener. The Lady Bucs advance to face top-seeded George Washington in Monday’s South Region second round.

The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs are building momentum at 24-10 after a perfect 3-0 showing at Hurricane and a home tri-match split. Two final regular-season matches will tune them up for next week’s South Regional Tournament.

The $4 million award adds public funding for Buckhannon’s new $47 million water plant project. The state is also recommending another $3 million in loans and principal forgiveness.
