BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – A goal in the 62nd-minute by Wheeling Jesuit senior Martin Minuzzi was the difference in the Cardinals 1-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan College in a Mountain East Conference match Saturday evening.
The win improves the Wheeling Jesuit University men’s soccer team to 5-2 in league play, 6-2-2 overall. Meanwhile, the Bobcats drop to 2-6-2 overall, 2-6 in the MEC.
Shots were even through the opening half of the game, while Wheeling Jesuit held a 6-to-1 edge in corner kicks awarded.
Both defenses were stout throughout most of the match, but the Cardinals broke through in the second half when Minuzzi put the ball into the back of the net off of a pass from sophomore McKinley Fodness to make the score 1-0.
Wesleyan had a trio of scoring opportunities, including a pair of shots in the final 10 minutes that were stopped by Wheeling’s freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Bosmyr to preserve the clean sheet.
Overall, the Bobcats held the edge in shots, 11-to-7, while WJU controlled a 10-to-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Wesleyan will have a few days off before traveling to take on West Liberty on Thursday.
