Football ‘Cats have negative 22 yards rushing in 52-14 loss to No. 14 Notre Dame

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio — The West Virginia Wesleyan (0-7) football team fell on the road 52-14 to No. 14 Notre Dame College (6-1) at Mueller Field on Saturday (Oct. 16).

WVWC Leaders
Javian Tomlinson scored both of Wesleyan’s touchdowns on the ground. Dariuse Cooper caught six passes for 60 yards. Devin Taylor reeled in seven catches for 58 yards. Nathan Payne finished 18-of-22 through the air for 159 passing yards.

Donovan Woods made an interception while Michael Herbert recorded two tackles for loss including one sack. Deontre Logan forced a fumble. Jalen Fant made a fumble recovery.

Notre Dame (Ohio) Leaders
Tyris Dickerson carried the ball 16 times for 128 yards and a touchdown. Guam Lee registered 10 total tackles including three for loss.

Inside the First Half
The Falcons drove 40 yards to score on their opening drive after a 13 yard touchdown run by Dickerson. NDC had a short field to work with again with 10:48 left in the first quarter, as Tyshawn Lighty found paydirt from nine yards away.

Notre Dame (Ohio) turned to the air for its next score on a 10 yard touchdown pass from Chris Brimm to Jalen Boyd with 4:19 remaining in the first quarter. After one quarter, the Falcons led 28-0.

Early in the second quarter on fourth down, Brimm was intercepted down the right side of the field by Donovan Woods. The Bobcats took advantage of the turnover and began a scoring drive highlighted by a 32 yard pass from Payne to Taylor as Wesleyan moved into NDC territory. The series was capped off by a Tomlinson touchdown rumble from one yard away.

The Falcons converted a 31 yard field goal in the closing seconds of the first half for a 31-7 halftime advantage.

Inside the Second Half
WVWC forced another turnover to begin the second half. Logan knocked the ball loose from Jalen Boyd and recovered the fumble.

Near the end of the third quarter, Payne let the ball fly to Cooper on fourth down for a 20 yard gain to the Notre Dame (Ohio) 13 yard line. Tomlinson punched in his second touchdown run of the afternoon from a yard out with 14:27 to play in the game.

The Falcons scored 21 fourth quarter points.

The Bobcats are scheduled to return home to Ross Field on Saturday, Oct. 23 for a 1 p.m. kickoff against Alderson Broaddus.
