23 new cases of COVID-19, one additional death reported in West Virginia on Saturday

A total of 23 new known cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in West Virginia on Saturday, and one additional death was attributed to the virus.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 5 p.m., on May 16, 2020, there have been 73,617 laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 1,470 positive, 72,147 negative and 65 deaths,” according to a press release.

The DHHR confirmed the death of an 89-year old male from Fayette County.

About 473 of the West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 919 people have recovered and 65 have died, a mortality rate of about 6.6 percent.

New cases were reported Saturday in Berkeley, Cabell, Calhoun, Harrison, Jefferson, Kanawha, Marion, Mineral, Mingo, Monongalia, Pocahontas, Roane and Wood counties.
