UCKHANNON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Wesleyan (3-1-0, 2-1-0) men’s soccer team took No. 1 Charleston (4-1-0, 3-1-0) to overtime before surrendering a golden goal in the 108th minute in a 2-1 loss on Sunday (Sept. 19) at Culpepper Stadium.

The Golden Eagles got on the board first in the ninth minute when Alejandro Larrayoz centered the ball into the back of the net, thanks to an assist by Luis Maestre. In the 38th minute, off of a corner kick by Connor Hartwell, Hunter Dierlam headed the ball right to Charleston’s keeper Marc Torrado. Charleston led 1-0 at halftime.

Wesleyan answered in the 65th minute as Nika Monaselidze picked up his fifth assist of the season on a ball hit towards the net. Zacharias Kohring did the rest to send it past Torrado for the equalizer and his first collegiate goal.

The score remained deadlocked 1-1 as the game entered overtime. Charleston controlled possession in the first half of overtime, but the Bobcat defenders led by Luis Diaz and Charlie Naylor prevented any real chances.

Logan Nelson made two of his seven saves in overtime including one in the 104th minute. UC broke through on an Eduardo Barros goal with Alexis Ledoux on the attack in the 108th minute for the golden goal to help Charleston escape Buckhannon with a win.

The Bobcats are scheduled to play a road match at Concord on Wednesday, Sept. 22.
