WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital has been recognized with the Silver Medal in the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines program for coronary artery disease and heart failure, marking an impressive achievement in the hospital’s first year of application.

This recognition highlights the hospital’s commitment to following the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines in treating patients with heart disease — ensuring patients receive timely and effective care that improves outcomes and saves lives.

About 6.7 million U.S. adults are living with heart failure, or HF, a number that is expected to increase to more than 8 million by 2030. Despite the name, heart failure doesn’t mean that the heart has stopped working — it means the heart is having a hard time pumping blood and oxygen throughout the body. While there’s no cure for HF, patients can live a quality life by working with their health care team to create and stick with a plan that may include medication, symptom monitoring and lifestyle changes.

“This award is a testament to the dedication and tireless work of our entire team,” said Dr. Daniel Brito, cardiologist at WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital. “It reflects the collaborative efforts between our office and hospital staff to provide the highest standard of care for our patients. We are proud to be aligned with the mission and vision of the WVU Heart & Vascular Institute and we will continue to push the bar higher. This is just the beginning of many great things to come.”

Brito added, “I am both grateful and humbled by the support I’ve received from our leadership and team. I hope we can continue to find new ways to advance this journey and bring even more positive change to the lives of our patients.”

The Get With The Guidelines initiative is designed to help hospitals consistently deliver the latest evidence-based care for cardiac patients, ensuring that best practices are implemented to improve patient recovery and reduce hospital readmissions.

WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital’s achievement of Silver Medal status showcases a deep commitment to quality, consistency and the well-being of patients in north-central West Virginia.
