Wrestling Bucs put through the grinder at Washington Elite Opener

WASHINGTON – In a loaded field featuring some of the top teams from West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland, the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers finished 10th at the Washington Elite Opener this past Saturday.

The Bucs finished the tournament with 146 points.

Wheeling Park won the event with 424 points, while Mount St. Joseph (Md.) was second with a 334 points.

“This tournament was a meat grinder,” remarked B-U head coach Jacob Orr. “It featured a lot of tough, tough competition. It was a great way to gauge where we are and where we need to get to. Some of us took some lumps this weekend, but that’s okay — that is kind of what I expected. However, we don’t dwell on a loss. We learn from it and move forward.”

Nathan Cornett had a solid showing for the Bucs as he placed fourth with a 4-1 record.

“The standout wrestler of the weekend was Nathan Cornett,” noted Orr. “He put together a string of a couple of really nice matches. It was fun watching him on the mat this weekend. He wrestled pretty open and free, and good things happened for him. it was fun watching him get after it.”

The Bucs will be back on the mat Wednesday in a road dual with Morgantown.
