William Clyde Campbell, age 92, of French Creek, WV, died Monday, June 8, 2026, at WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon, WV.
He was born August 9, 1933, in Buckhannon, a son of the late George Winters “Wint” and Anna Lula Werner Campbell. On December 24, 1953, he married Lora Belle Smallridge, who preceded him in death on January 4, 2016.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son, David Campbell; one son-in-law, Roger Tolliver; and three brothers, Carl, James, and Glenn Campbell.
Surviving are three sons, Bill Campbell and wife Sandy, Bob Campbell and wife Cathy, and Mike Campbell, all of French Creek; one daughter, Ruth Tolliver of Rock Cave, WV; one daughter-in-law, Nikki Campbell of Romney, WV; six grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Mr. Campbell served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. Clyde was the first State Trapper for WV in 1962. He was a retired DNR Officer and a retired Supervisor for the WV State Wildlife Center (Game Farm) in French Creek.
He won the SUBA Citizen of the Year award in March 2019, was a former member of the Stonecoal Lake Fishing Club, a member of the NWTF Stonewall Jackson Chapter, a member of the Rock Cave Baptist Church, and enjoyed helping Greg Moats with Hunter Ridge Wing and Clay. On his 90th birthday in August 2023, Clyde received a Senate Citation from Senator Bill Hamilton.
Clyde was an avid hunter, especially turkey, and owner of Double C Mountain Turkey Calls. He would spend hours upon hours in his garage making turkey box calls.
Friends will be received for a memorial gathering Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 2 PM to 6 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held 6 PM at the funeral home with Pastor David Jessie officiating. The Upshur County Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
